Convocation Address at Kolkata on 8th January 2007
|
| |
Dignitaries on the Dias, Past Presidents of FOGSI, Past Chairmen of ICOG, Invited Guests and my dear Fellows & Members of ICOG.
Welcome to this Convocation, which is being held in the presence of a galaxy of academicians of National & International standing. It must be really inspiring for the new entrants who are going to join our College, to receive their degrees in the presence of so many academically brilliant persons who are in the auditorium to witness this Convocation. Thank you for being with us.
This Convocation Ceremony is being held in the historic city, which has given us 3 Nobel Laureates. Rabindranath Tagore was a person of literature, arts and music. We owe our national anthem to him. Arts and science are also parallel streams of human endeavor. Those of us who are devoted to the pursuit of science must always be aware of the richness of arts and music to be sensitive and appreciative. Mother Theresa was an embodiment of charity. She was sensitive to the needs of the poor and downtrodden. I hope all of us can imbibe that virtue.
Amartya Sen the great Economist has time and time again emphasized that the developmental goals of a nation cannot be reached unless the women participate and that the status of women improves. We are committed to the improvement of the health status of our women and their involvement in nation building.
So Ladies and Gentlemen, I reiterate the messages given by these 3 Nobel Laureates of this city and hope that we take them as “Carry Home Messages” and remember them for all time to come.
But today we meet and welcome our new Fellows and Members.
On behalf of the College and myself, I wish you all the very best. May you continue your academic pursuits with the full support of our College. May you also fulfill your dreams and ambitions and find happiness in the service of humanity. The future of this College is your capable hands as also the health and well-being of the women of India. I have full confidence in your abilities and look forwards to your active participation in all our activities. The College is going to be enriched by all the new Fellows & Members who are joining it today. Today is your Day, enjoy it, revere it and we are all here to share it with you.
Namaskar & Jai Hind. |
